The fifth edition of the Asian Under 23 Fencing Championships got underway in Tokyo Japan with a record field of 237 fencers with 50 teams representing 25 countries around Asia and Oceania.
The AU23 was inaugurated in Manila in 2012 and again held in the same city in 2014. Kuwait hosted the competition in 2013, while Mongolia organized the same in 2015. Six Individual and six team events are played over six days, with the federation/country winning the overall honors being awarded with the perpetual SHIEKH AHMAD AL-FAHAD AL-SABAH CHAMPIONSHIPS CUP. China won the cup in 2013, while Korea took over in 2014 and 2015.
FCA President CELSO DAYRIT and Japan Fencing Federation MASASHI HOSHINO led the officials and athletes in the Opening Ceremonies held on October 25 at the Sumida City Gymnasium, Sumida-ku, Tokyo.
