Wakayama, Japan - 5th Sept., 2018. Three Hundred and Seventy veteran fencers from 12 Countries stirred up a storm at the 4th Asian Veteran Fencing Championships (AVFC) in Wakayama Japan, the largest field so far in the short history of AVFC. Fencers competed in 4 age categories, 40-49 (for ladies 35-49), 50-59, 60-69 and over 70. All weapon groups in individual and team events were participated this year and with notable increase in participation in the higher age groups.
Japan fencers captured most of the medals with Hong Kong second and China third. The last day of the Team events had to be moved forward a day due to Typhoon Jebi approaching Wakayama. We are glad that all fencers and their family returned home safely and the adverse weather condition provided some fencers additional excitement and extra days of rest and play before flying home!
We are all very encouraged by the steady increase of participation in this new championship, coupling with the start of FCA Veteran Circuit next season and introduction of veteran ranking system, we are sure the development of veteran fencing in Asia will be moving in the right direction, next year the AVFC will be in Taipei and followed by Hong Kong in 2020.
Below are medal tables for individual and team events:
