2019 ASIAN VETERANS CHAMPIONSHIPS A MILESTONE

The 5th Asia Veterans Fencing Championships was successfully completed in Taipei last weekend from 16-19 August 2019. The 4 days championships attracted competitors from 12 Countries with 107 ladies and 327 men making a total of 434 entries.

The Countries that took parts were: Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Hong Kong SAR, India, Iran, Japan New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Uzbekistan, with Japan being the largest contingent followed by Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong SAR and China.

This Championships also continues the very unique traditions of veterans taking part in multiple weapons, this year around 25% of veteran are competing in 2 or all 3 weapons. This does post a challenge to the DT in terms of scheduling but the DT Team had done a fantastic job in keeping the bouts moving and without clashes.

On behalf of all the veterans, we would also like to thank the Organizer under the leadership of Dr Victor Chang, President of Chinese Taipei Fencing Association, in producing a wonderful and memorable championships for all, especially the Championships dinner where all the individual medals were presented.

Last but not lease, hats off to all the referees for their hard work, professionalism and their patience in refereeing veteran bouts. To all the volunteers in weapon checks and logistics, always wearing a sunshine smile and ready to assist.

The final medal table is attached below, in a way it is not how many medals you have won, but the camaraderie spirit, old friends reacquainted, new friendships forged and sometimes our struggle to get fit and well enough to compete.
